Health & Wellbeing

Over the past ten years, we have delivered a self-funded health and wellbeing programme that supports people living with long-term health conditions such as cancer, dementia, diabetes, COPD and cardiac incidents.

Thanks to a dedicated team of highly-qualified instructors, we deliver 91 health classes a week, with 4,000 participants attending classes to enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits experienced by getting active, as well as meeting others who are living with similar conditions to their own.

All donations will be used by our Health & Wellbeing team, every donation is very much appreciated! Below we have some examples of where your donation could be spent.

  • £10 could cover a customer telephone call or Whatsapp video call catch up
  • £25  could cover a live Zoom class, a walking session or a face to face class, or a YouTube home workout video
  • £50  could cover the cost of provisions for a weekly social cafe for 1 month
  • £100  could cover the cost of giving a class of 15 people Therabands to enable them to do strength exercises at home 



Important Customer Information

The Health and Wellbeing team are delighted that the health programme has restarted. All previous participants have been contacted and are enjoying being back in their groups. We have also begun to accept new referrals to the programme so if you have a health condition and would like to be referred, please contact your health professional to ask for a referral.

Physical activity promotes a number of positive health outcomes; improved physical and mental health, quality of life, social connectedness and disease prevention.

We recognise that becoming more active can be a challenge especially when living with a long-term health condition, so in order to support health-enhancing physical activity, we have developed a number of accessible and affordable programmes that provide a supportive environment in which a person can become more active.

49ers Activity Sessions

Join in our multi-activity club for older adults.

These sessions allow participants to be active, have fun and make friends while playing various racquet sports, including; Table Tennis, Short Tennis, Squash, and Badminton.

All abilities welcome come along on your own or with a friend. These 90 minute sessions are only £3.80 per person. Contact reception to book or for more details.

Active Strength and Balance

Our level one and two classes are suitable for people who have problems with activities of daily living, may have limited standing balance and who walk with an aid.

The focus of this class is to work with people to maintain and improve their strength and balance to help prevent falls and enable people to live as independently as possible. The class also provides an opportunity for participants to meet new people within their community.

Active Options 2 class



Get Moving with Counterweight

Get Moving with Counterweight is a free 12-month group programme which supports people to make small changes to their diet and lifestyle to help manage their weight and become more active. It’s a healthy lifestyle programme funded by NHS Fife in partnership with Fife Sports & Leisure Trust.

The initial phase of the group programme runs for 12 consecutive weeks. The groups are small with a maximum of 15 people.

Each weekly session lasts 90 mins and is broken down into 45 minutes of dietary information and 45 minutes of physical activity.

After the 12-week programme there are weekly drop in weigh in sessions and follow up group sessions at 6, 9 and 12 months.

What can I expect?
Your weight will be monitored at each group sessions. It is treated confidentially and will not be shared with the group. At each group session you will be taken through a series of 45 mins interactive topics including: 

  • Weight loss goals and energy requirements 
  • Healthy eating and active living 
  • Understanding food labels 
  • Healthy shopping, cooking and eating out 
  • Eating habits and emotions 
  • How to prevent lapsing and relapsing 
  • Maintaining your weight loss permanently

By the end of the programme you have the skills to manage your weight for life.

Am I suitable?
Get Moving with Counterweight is suitable for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 30kg/m2 and a weight less than 160kg (25 stone 3 pounds).

Currently we only accept referrals from the NHS Fife Adult Weight Management team.

Walking Football is a great way to keep active, if you can walk, then you can play. Don’t forget - no running, no slide tackles, it’s a free kick if you do!

Active Circuits

Our level three and four classes are suitable for people who may have minimal problems with activities of daily living, may require a walking stick for additional support or who are independently mobile, with no problems with balance.

The focus of the class is to maintain and improve cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance and balance. The class also provides an opportunity for people to meet other people within their community.

Walking Football

Back to Fitness

The importance of physical activity has been recognised as a strategy in the management of back pain. Back to Fitness enables participants to develop an exercise programme including core strengthening and mobility exercises supporting them to be more active.


Walking group

Move More Fife

Evidence shows that being active can play a vital role in helping prevent a recurrence of cancer, can slow disease progression, as well as reduce the side effects and consequences of cancer treatment. Move More Fife is part of Macmillan Cancer Support's national campaign to ensure that people living with cancer are supported to become physically active, both before, during and after their treatment.


Cardiac rehab class

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is recognised worldwide to reduce the risk of a further cardiac event. The programme provides important information and activities to help individuals address their risk factors and regular attendance will improve emotional, mental, social and physical health and wellbeing. The programme is delivered in partnership with Fife Cardiac Rehab Services.




In partnership with NHS Fife’s Central Stop Smoking Service's Team, we are offering a 4 week fitness pass to participants who sign up to the Quitfit programme. 

The service is available to communities throughout Fife and offers smoking cessation advice and peer support in a community-based setting, encouraging physical activity to boost long-term positive healthy behaviour change at the time of the quit attempt. 

Sessions are held weekly on Tuesday evenings at Cowdenbeath Leisure Centre (passes can be used in any FSLT venue). Please attend at 5.30pm for your first visit then from 6.00pm - 7.00pm thereafter.
